The overwhelming darkness didn't change much when my eyes fluttered open and didn't magically go away when they began to adjust and focus either. I tried to move my arm, but the soreness and sharp pain in my chest stopped me from doing much more than wiggling my back against the wall. At least that gave me some perspective.
The room I was in was small, cramped and almost empty. In one corner was a makeshift commode, and across from that was what looked like iron bars. Outside the bars I could see flickering light, like an open flame. The floor was cobblestone, nicked and rounded by the years, and covered in dirt and grime. I lay on what felt like a wooden board on the floor, a roach passing just inches from my face. I pushed my arms against the ground again, forcing myself up to my knees as the pain seared through the back of my arm. It was bruised badly and dried blood stained my shirt and crusted under my nose, telling me that at some point I had been hit.
I listened for the sound of Stryder or Harley or Roane. I knew I was alone, but I wanted to hold out hope. Maybe one of them was in a cell near me and we could figure out what to do next together. Even as I tried to convince myself of that, I knew it wasn’t true. The Summer Fae who had lured me away from the camp revealed themselves as soon as I was in their grip. None of the others were with me and I didn’t know how long I’d been gone. They might not have even realized I was gone.
I inched closer to the bars and tried to peer through them. There were only three cells, one across from me and one to the side. Both were empty sans the skeleton of some unfortunate soul in one. The walls curved sharply in another direction and the flame came from just behind it.
From far away, I heard voices murmuring. Two deep growling voices spoke in low tones, and I could just make out a phrase.
"...if not, we get rid of her."
“We can’t do that. Ajeka would have our heads.”
“She’d never know we found her. I’m not putting my skin on the line for some human woman. If she’s too much trouble, she’ll just disappear.”
The words sent a shiver down my spine, and I recoiled to the board when I saw shadows moving toward me. Two Fae men stood at the bars of my cell and peered in at me and through my mostly closed eyes, I could see the taller one snicker and turn to the other.
"Six hours, and then I'll be down to relieve you. She might be out the entire time. Gartha hit her pretty hard in the back of the head."
"Are you sure she's still alive?"
"She is. For now. I can see her breathing. We have to keep her alive until she has fulfilled her purpose.
